Are our attention spans really shorter than a goldfish’s?

Follow this link, and find yourself reading about a study by Microsoft in Canada where it is believed that our attention spans have decreased by four seconds and are now shorter than a goldfish’s.

Is this why we are all so interested in tabloidization and the Kardashian/Jenners?

Have smartphones really caused us to indulge in news that isn’t newsworthy because it’s all we can read?

What do y’all think?

Have your say below.

Love always, Nicole

The space’s inspiration

WARNING: EXPLICIT CONTENT AHEAD.

(You have been warned, so now it’s your own fault)

It came to my attention when I was roughly 15 – in 10th grade – where everyone thought suicide was just a cry for attention. That you couldn’t want to end your life, or your suffering without being an attention seeker.

That’s where my hatred for my peers spawned and a lot of other things appeared. Especially when I started looking at ‘news’ spread over social media.

This post on Facebook, is exactly the polar opposite of what I grew up around, yet it explains so much in so little words.

Social media, especially Facebook, was and still is flooded with horrible opinions from the ‘cool’ kids. Which would make anyone who wasn’t with them feel worse.

From there I have realised how badly represented the news all around us is, and hence Why News Sucks.

The representation of news is my inspiration for this page.

It’s why this space isn’t “Does News Suck?” or “What’s With News?” it’s “Why News Sucks.” Because it does. And that’s that.

Distorted by social media and tabloidization the news is no longer newsworthy. And this kind of news is horrible to read.

As a population, we care so much that Kim K was robbed of so much, when she has so much more, but we care less when someone with nothing is robbed of what little they had.

US Weekly reported updates as they received them on their website:

And video can be found on YouTube here: http://bit.ly/2eegrIR

This video was dubbed by USA Today as the: “Chilling Kim Kardashian Robbery Video.”

Most of the time these crimes do not even make the news so what so important about a Kardashian?

Why News Sucks will consist of opinions and data sourced primarily for the purpose of this space.

This space is here because, in our busy lifestyles, we lack the time and motivation to criticise anything we read in this day and age.

Thankyou,

Love Always, Nicole.

Welcome and Hello!

Hi y’all, welcome to Why News Sucks, I am your hostess Nicole.

As a Journalism student, it has come to my attention how much news sucks, and that’s what I’m here to share with you.

But that’s still to come.

Right now, while I fight the struggles of being a rural, full-time, internal University student and being a part-time night filler at Coles, I want to introduce myself.

By the 24th, I will be both 19 and entering the final two weeks of my first year of University.

And it’s daunting.

AF.

But anyways, I’m half AU and half IT. So naturally when I don’t like watching AFL or soccer I’m a kind of outcast in either culture. My love for NFL makes it worse, and trust me I’ve heard all the criticism; don’t make me tell you where to shove it.

I’m an avid lover of music and dance, but I can only dance; so I’m more of a appreciator of music. And I’ve also heard all the criticism about Country music, and it’s BS.

Because Country music is fabulous.

And there’s nothing you can say to change my opinion of that. Nothing.

I want to get my ideas for this out in the open:

  1. I want to reach out to the public and see what they think of the news.
  2. I want to express my own thoughts on the ‘news’.
  3. I want to enlighten you to what I mean when I say “The news sucks.”
  4. I don’t want to be another cliche, #aNOThercliche much?

But so far that’s about it.

I want to leave you with this Shakespearean passage:

And as imagination bodies forth
The forms of things unknown, the poet’s pen
Turns them to shapes and gives to airy nothing
A local habitation and a name
– William Shakespeare (A Midsummer Night’s Dream)

News is news, but news isn’t newsworthy anymore #KimKardashianWestWho?

And I want to wish y’all a good end to your day, because I’m signing off

Love always, Nicole
